Question

Explain the octact rule with the help of the electronic configuration of inert gases.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student
Octet rule says that " there can not be more than 8 electrons in outermost(valence) shell".
Atoms with lesser valence electrons always try to achieve 8 valence electrons as this electronic configuration makes an atom chemically inert. All noble gases (except He) are chemically inert because they have 8 valence electrons.
Helium has just one shell so it can possess maximum 2 electrons.
