Question

Explain the particle model of light and what is the difference between wave and particle model with no links

Solution

Dear Student ,
The Particle Model for light is required to gain an understanding of how light performs at atomic levels. When light interacts with atoms, it performs as if it is comprised of tiny grains or particles of solid matter. Also known as the Quantum Optics Model it explains light as tiny packets of energy or particles known as photons. The Particle Model is needed to explain how things like the photoelectric effect and lasers work. It also explains optical spectroscopy.
Light has photons, which are particles and light also has wave-like properties. Since intensity is equal to energy in a wave, light exhibits wave like properties. However, light is made up of photons and at a certain intensity, even thought there are more photons the overall energy is not affected. This is due to the fact that the frequency has to be increased in order for the photons to effect the overall energy because the photons are at too low of energy to displace an electron even if you continue to increase the intensity of the light.
