Dear student,
The power-sharing arrangement devised in Belgium is quite unique and innovative. The Belgian leaders recognised the regional diversities prevalent in the country and hence tried to provide each community a due share in the country’s governance. The salient features of the power-sharing arrangement in Belgium are as follows:
(i) The number of Dutch and French-speaking ministers in the central government is same and equal.
(ii) There is a requirement of majority of members from each linguistic group under the presence of certain special laws that affect a particular community.
(iii) Flemish and Wallonia regions have been vested many powers of the central government and they are almost equivalent in power level to the central government.
(iv) There is a separate government for Brussels in which both the Dutch and French communities have an equal representation. A provision is made for community government which is elected by the people. This government is vested with powers related to cultural, educational and linguistic issues.
Regards.
