Question

Explain the process by which conduction of heat occurs.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Conduction is the process of transfer of heat from a hot part to a cold part of an object without the actual movement of the molecules.
  2. This mode of heat transfer takes place mainly in solids and to a lesser extent in liquids and gases.
  3. Heat is transferred from one object to another by conduction if, the two objects are in contact and they are at different temperatures.
  4. When the temperature becomes equal the heat transfer stops.
  5. The molecules that make up an object are constantly vibrating.
  6. When an object is heated the molecule vibrates faster.
  7. Hence, they collide with their neighboring molecules, and make them vibrate faster too.
  8. Thus, heat travels through the object due to the vibration of molecules.
