Question

Explain the process by which inhalation occurs during breathing in human beings ?

Open in App
Solution

Inhalation:

  1. The process of inhalation is the intake of oxygen-rich air through the nostrils into the lungs.
  2. During inhalation, the diaphragm present at the base of the chest cavity moves downward.
  3. The rib bones move upward and outward.
  4. This also includes intercostal muscles contracting to increase the chest cavity.
  5. The changes in the chest cavity increase the size of the chest cavity providing a large surface area of the lungs where the inhaled air can enter.
  6. The air entering the lungs rushes in so that enough oxygen gets to reach the alveoli so that it can enter the blood through the blood capillaries.
