Question

Explain the process of fertilization in plants which lead to formation of zygote.

Open in App
Solution

Fertilization is the process of fusion of male and female gamete to form zygote.

  • The male reproductive organ is anther which produces pollen grains. Pollen grains contain the male gamete in them.
  • The female reproductive organ is ovary which produces the female gamete.
  • The pollen grains are transferred to the stigma of the female reproductive part through pollination.
  • Pollen grains then produce a pollen tube and transfer male gametes to the ovary.
  • Inside the ovary, the male gamete fuses with the female gamete to form zygote.
