Question

Explain the reason behind the difference in the rate of evaporation. Explain the reason behind the difference in the rate of evaporation of 10 ml water and acetone

Open in App
Solution

Rate of evaporation depends on the solvent-solvent interaction. If the force of attraction is more then the solvent molecule does not evaporate easily and it has less rate of evaporation. Whereas if the force of attraction is less then the solvent molecule will evaporate quickly and it has higher rate of evaporation. If you compare the rate of evaporation of 10 ml of water and acetone, acetone has higher rate of evaporation than the water. Because water has strong hydrogen bonding and does not easily evaporate.
