Robespierre, the leader of the Jacobin club, arrested, imprisoned and then tried all the people he saw as ‘enemies’ of the republic l. They included ex nobles and clergy, members of other political parties, even members of his own party who did not agree with his methods. If the court found them ‘guilty’, they were executed using guillotines. Apart from this, people were only allowed to have only a fixed amount of meat and bread. Peasants were forced to send their grain to the cities and sell it at prices fixed by the government. The citizens were only allowed to eat a loaf of bread made of whole wheat called the equality bread. Churches were shut down and their buildings were converted into barracks or offices. His policies were so strict that even his supporters did not agree with many of them.
