Explain the relation between inclined plane and screw .Describe the working of (a) jack used to lift car (b)vice.

A paper is cut in a triangular shape and wound around a pencil making a sloping edge which resembles the grooves or threads on a screw.

Relation between screw and an inclined plane

  1. A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around it.
  2. When a screw is rotated, the force on the head is transmitted along the grooves and the screw winds into the material along the grooves.
    Working of
  3. The bolt and nut fixed inside the fixed nut and jack used to lift a car work on same principle. When the screw of a jack is rotated the car is gradually pushed up.

(b) Vice -it is used to grip the objects firmly in between them

  1. The jaws of the vice is used to hold the objects firmly while the screw is rotated by turning the handle
  2. One of the jaw is fixed while the other moves due to the screw.
  3. The jaws can be made to apply large force on the object by turning the screw.
