  2. Explain how the Ottomans took the opportunity when the Seljuq Turks were weak.
  3. Mention the point in time when the Ottoman empire fell apart.
Solution :
The rise of the Ottomans can be explained as follows:
  • When the Mongols began their conquest in Asia, the Ottoman Turks ran away and took shelter under the Seljuq Turks in West Asia.
  • When the Seljuq Turks started showing signs of weakness, the Ottomans started taking control of the empire.
  • They advanced towards Europe, invaded Bulgaria and Serbia, and established their capital at Adrianople.
  • The Ottomans laid a siege on Constantinople and waited for their surrender.
  • Constantinople was ultimately conquered in 1453 A. D. by Mohammad II and Ottoman authority was established in the Balkans, the Black Sea and the Middle East.
The fall of the Ottomans can be explained as follows:
  • The Ottomans maintained their supremacy over the region for some time. The whole of Europe, mostly under Christianity feared them.
  • They considered themselves the Caliph after taking over Egypt and became an important player in international geopolitics.
  • But, as the 19th century progressed, the Ottoman started crumbling and finally fell apart during the first World War.
