Dear student,
The rise of Napoleon can be summed in the following points.

  • Political Crisis after revolution: France was struggling politically internally during and after the revolution because of the sectorial division of powers. First Republic faced major challenges to restore rule of law in the land. Extrajudicial killings, execution of Louis XVI, fights between Jacobins and Girondins which ultimately led to the fall of Girondins and giving birth to reign of terror were some of the reasons why countrymen felt that they need a leader.
  • Shortage of food and employment: The immediate factor that started the revolution was ultimately never addressed was the shortage of foods. Additionally political instability gave rise to unemployment and masses were in demand for major restoration of political system.
  • Reign of Terror: Revolutionary ideas in France quickly turned into violent ideas. Many people were ruthlessly guillotined on the charges of being hoarders and profiteers. Till Robespierre and his allies were curbed they executed thousands of people.
  • Directors often clashed with legislative Councils and the latter sought to dismiss them.

  • Political instability of the Directory paved the way for the rise of military dictator Napoleon Bonaparte
