Explain the role of sunlight, chlorophyll, temperature and carbon dioxide in photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis:

  1. It is the process by which autotrophs are able to synthesise their own food.
  2. Plants use simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to produce complex organic substances such as glucose and starch.
  3. It is termed as photosynthesis because it can only occur in the presence of sunlight.
  4. The chlorophyll pigment in plants help in trapping the energy from the sun.
  5. Glucose, Oxygen and water are the products formed during photosynthesis.

Role of sunlight in photosynthesis:

  1. The energy from the sunlight is used to split the water molecule into Hydrogen and Hydroxide ions.
  2. The Hydrogen ions reduce Carbon dioxide into Glucose.
  3. Glucose is the primary source of energy for plants.

Role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis:

  1. Chlorophyll traps sunlight energy for the plant.
  2. This energy is used to split the water molecule into Hydrogen and Hydroxide ions.
  3. The Hydrogen ions then reduce Carbon dioxide into Glucose.

Role of temperature in photosynthesis:

  1. Temperature plays an important role in the process of photosynthesis.
  2. The increase in temperature also increases the rate of photosynthesis.

Role of carbon dioxide in photosynthesis:

  1. Carbon dioxide is the primary gas required for the process of photosynthesis to occur.
  2. Carbon dioxide gets reduced to Glucose during photosynthesis.
  3. If carbon dioxide gas is unavailable, plant wouldn't be able to photosynthesise.
