Explain the statement that Green Revolution enabled the government to procure sufficient foodgrains to build its stocks that could be used during times of shortage.
The use of modern technology, extensive use of fertilisers, pesticides and High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds which together resulted in Green Revolution, led to an impressive rise in food grain production. The agricultural productivity and average yield also increased considerably.
The other measures accompanying the Green Revolution such as the development of marketing system, abolition of intermediaries and subsidised credit for farm investment also led to an increase in the level of marketable surplus.
All these factors contributed to higher crop yield which enabled the government to procure sufficient foodgrains to build the buffer stock to be used in time of shortages due to scanty rainfall, delayed monsoon, drought and other natural calamities.
