Explain the structure of Golgi bodies as seen in plant and animal cells.

Solution

Golgi bodies:

  1. These are the stacks of small flattened sacs formed by membranes inside the cell's cytoplasm.
  2. Their main function is the packaging and secretion of proteins.

Structure of Golgi bodies:

  1. The structure of Golgi bodies as seen in plant and animal cells are quite similar.
  2. A Golgi body has two faces and they are the Cis face (convex side) and Trans face (concave side).
  3. It has a zone of clear cytoplasm known as the zone of exclusion.
  4. It consists of flattened sac-like structures which are known as cisternae.
  5. Here, cisternae are held parallel and lie one above the other.
  6. The cisternae are curved like shallow bowls showing one face to the Cis or proximal face and the other face to the Trans face.
  7. These cisternae are filled with the cisternal lumen.
  8. Vacuoles are formed from the Trans face of the Golgi body.
  9. Vesicles are found attached at the end of tubules.
