Question

Explain the structure of H2O2.How does H2O2 behave as a bleaching agent?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen peroxide acts as a bleaching agent due to the release of nascent oxygen .
H2O2H2O+O

The nascent oxygen combines with colouring matter which in turn gets oxidised. Thus the bleaching action of H2O2 is due to the oxidation of colouring matter by nascent oxygen.

It is used for bleaching material like ivory, Silk, wool, feather.
