The Swadeshi movement started in Bengal following the partition of Bengal in 1905. It continued up to 1911 when the partition was annulled. The movement started as a protest against the partition of the province by the British Viceroy, Lord Curzon. It soon developed into a struggle against the British economic dominance of the country. Protestors advocated the boycott of British made goods, particularly British clothes. They urged people to use swadeshi products. Hence, the movement began to be called the Swadeshi movement.
