Question

Explain the technique of separation of miscible liquids by fractional distillation?

Open in App
Solution

Fractional distillation:

  • The separation of a mixture of miscible liquids by distillation is called fractional distillation.
  • This process works on the basis of the difference in the boiling points of liquids.

The technique of separation:

  • The mixture of alcohol and water is kept in a distillation flask and heated.
  • The liquid with the lower boiling point evaporates first, gets condensed in the Liebig's condenser and is collected in a flask.
  • The liquid with a higher boiling point remains in the distillation flask.
