Explain the term cartilage.

Cartilage:

  1. Cartilage is composed of a ground substance called matrix in which the cartilage cells called chondrocytes are present.
  2. These cells are arranged in groups of two, four, or eight and are found in the fluid-filled spaces termed lacunae.
  3. This tissue is highly elastic and resistant to crushing.
  4. It is present between the bones to decrease the pressure and to relieve the bones of shocks.
  5. It is found at the end of bones, in the windpipe, tip of the nose and the external ear.
  6. Blood vessels are not found in this tissue.
