Question

Explain the term destarched plant?

Open in App
Solution

Destarching of plants is the process of removing excess chemical energy created from the process of photosynthesis as starch in leaves.

  1. Photosynthesis occurs in plants in presence of sunlight.
  2. Photosynthesis in plants converts solar energy into chemical energy.
  3. This excess chemical energy is stored as starch in the leaves of plants.
  4. Starch is a reserved food source stored in the leaves of plants.
  5. Starch is a white color, powder-like substance.
  6. Starch houses glucose (C6H12O6), which is used as food by plants.
  7. Destarching of plants is done by leaving the plant in absence of sunlight (dark place) for two to three days.
  8. In absence of sunlight, plants cannot perform photosynthetic activity.
  9. In absence of sunlight, the plant cannot make starch and early stored starch is used up by the plant.
  10. Destarched plants do not contain starch in their leaves.
  11. Starch gives a blue-black color with iodine solution showing starch is present in the plant.
  12. Destarched plants are used for testing factors necessary for the process of photosynthesis.
