Explain the term hysteresis.

It is found that the magnetisation $M$ always lags behind the magnetising field $H$. The lagging of $M$ behind $H$ is called hysteresis.

In other word, the phenomenon in which the value of a physical property lags behind changes in the effect causing it, as for instance when magnetic induction lags behind the magnetizing force.
