The least count (L.C.) of a screw gauge is the linear distance moved by its screw along the main scale when the circular scale is rotated by one division on it.
$L . C = \frac{P i t c h o f s c r e w g a u g e}{T o t a l n u m b e r o f d i v i s i o n s o n c i r c u l a r s c a l e}$

If pitch of a screw gauge is 1mm and the circular scale has 100 divisions, then

L.C = $\frac{1 m m}{100} = 0.01 m m = 0.001 c m$
