Plate tectonics is a scientific theory which says that earths lithosphere is composed of distinct tectonic plates, these plates are in motion and have resulted in the drift of continents away from each other and formation of some mountains like Himalayas.

There are three types of plate movements

Folding- plates come close to each other and form a convergent boundary

Faulting- plates go away or tilt away from each other and form a divergent boundary

Rubbing- plates rub past each other and form a transform boundary
