Q.3. Why was Federation set up in India?
Ans. The federation was necessitated by the special circumstances and environment of society. The following circumstances compelled the framers of the Indian Constitution to adopt the federal form of government in the country:
(iii) Necessary for Integration of Princely States: There were a number of princely states which were left independent by the Indian Union, so federation was thought to be the best solution.

At the time of independence, there were a number of princely states in India. It was necessary to integrate them into the Indian union. These states had their own histories and traditions of governance. It was felt that a federal system would be the best way to integrate these princely states. A federal system would make it possible for such states to maintain their relatively autonomous identities within the Indian union. Hence, they would be more amenable towards a peaceful integration into the Indian union.
