Explain the three dimensional tackle on poverty adopted by the government.
The three dimensional approach to eradicate poverty comprises the following approahces:
1. Growth-oriented approach: This approach is based on an expectation that the effects of economic growth (rapid increase in GDP and per capita income) would spread to all sections of the society and will trickle down to the poorest sections too. It was felt that rapid industrial development and transformation of agriculture through green revolution in selected regions will benefit more backward sections of the community.
2. Poverty alleviation programmes: This is the second approach that has been initiated from the third five year plan and progressively implemented since then. The various poverty alleviation programmes in India include:
i. Pradhan Mantri Rozgar Yojana(PMRY)
ii. Swarna Jayanthi Shahri Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY)
iii. Swarna Jayanthi Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY)
iv. Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY)
v. Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005
3. Minimum Needs programmes : The third approach is to provide minimum basic amenties to the people. India recognised that proviidng basic needs is the way to go to reduce poverty levels in the country. Programmes under this approach are expected to supplement the consumption of the poor. Three major programmes that aim at improving the food and nutritional status of poor are:
(a) Public Distribution System
(b) Integrated Child Development Scheme
(c) Midday Meal Scheme
