The three major groups of food are energy-providing foods, body-building foods, and protective foods.
Energy-giving foods:

  1. These are composed of carbohydrates and fats.
  2. Carbohydrates provide us with instant energy.
  3. Fats are stored in the body as energy reservoirs.
  4. Example: Bread, Rice, Potato, Ghee, Oil, etc.

Body-building foods.

  1. Proteins are referred to as body-building foods because they help in the growth of the body
  2. They also help in repairing damaged cells and tissues of the body.
  3. Example: Fish, Meat, Eggs, Milk, etc.


Protective foods:

  1. Protective foods are chiefly vitamins and minerals because they protect our body from various diseases.
  2. They provide resistance to our body against disease-causing germs.
  3. Example: Fruits, Vegetables, etc.
