Question

Explain the three states of matter with respect to their force attraction and intermolecular space

Open in App
Solution

The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. I

Solid : In solid the force of attraction is very strong. A solid has rigidity because thermal motion is too weak to overpower the strong intermolecular forces of attraction. So there are lack of spaces between the molecules in a solid. Solids have constant shape because of tight intermolecular attractive forces between the molecules. So solids can not be compressed.

Liquid : Force of attraction in liquid is less strong than the solid. In liquid there is a balance between the intermolecular forces and thermal energy. Hence molecules in a liquid exist together i,e, it is a condense state of matter but there is no rigidity. The particles can move around and mix with other particles. Therefore, liquids can change shape to match their
container. The molecules are a little further than in a solid. So liquid are very difficult to compress. When molecules in a liquid attain enough energy to overcome the intermolecular forces present, the liquid evaporates.

Gas : In gaseous state the force of attraction is very weak. In a gas thermal energy is so high that the molecules can not come closer together,. Hence there are large empty spaces between them. So molecules can be compressed andcan flow and stick to shape of the container.
