  1. The smallest unit of ordinary matter that makes up a chemical element is an atom.
  2. An atom consists of protons, electrons, and neutrons.

Mass of an atom:

  1. Protons and neutrons provide mass to an atom.
  2. An electron has a very little mass and contributes very little to the mass of an atom.
  3. Because protons and neutrons are found inside the nucleus (center of an atom), the nucleus contains the majority of an atom's mass.
