Question

Explain tonicity. How solutions are classified on the basis of tonicity.

Solution

Tonicity

  1. The solute concentration relative to that of another side of the cell membrane affects the osmosis process is called tonicity.
  2. Thus, the relative concentration of solute on either side of the cell membrane determines the direction and extent of diffusion.

Solutions are classified based on the concentration of solute inside and outside of the cell membrane.

They are:

  1. Hypotonic solution: The solution is less concentrated as compared to the fluids inside the cell.
  2. Hypertonic solution: The solution is more concentrated as compared to the fluids inside the cell.
  3. Isotonic solution: The solution in which the relative concentration of water molecules and solute on either side of membrane is equal.
