Question

Explain total internal reflection. state the conditions.

Open in App
Solution

the effect that occurs when light meets the interface between the medium in which it is traveling and a medium
of smaller refractive index at an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle, all light being reflected back
to the first medium.
For total internal reflection to occur, 2 conditions must be met: 1. The index of refraction must decrease
across the boundary in the direction of light refraction. 2. The angle of incidence of the light ray
must exceed the critical angle of the interface.
