Question

Explain transpiration pull comprising adhesion and cohesion in plants.

Open in App
Solution

The upward movement of water occurs due to two main forces- Adhesive force and cohesive force. Adhesive force allows the water to stick to the organic tissues of plants and cohesive force keeps the water molecules to stick together.
When water is lost from the leaves due to transpiration, it creates a negative force that further creates a pulling force which further pulls the next water molecules and this pull is known as transpirational pull. So water moves up due to cohesive force between the water molecules as well as adhesive force between the water and tissues of the plants.
