Question

Explain two manifestations of root pressure.

Open in App
Solution

Root pressure :

  1. It is a force or the hydrostatic pressure generated in the roots that help in driving the fluids and other ions from the soil in an upward direction into vascular tissues in plants.
  2. It is responsible for the rise of water in vascular plants, though it is alone insufficient for the movement of sap against gravity, especially in tall trees.
  3. It is produced by osmotic pressure in root cells

.Guttation :

  1. It is the process of secretion of water droplets from the pores of vascular plants.
  2. It is generated by the hydrostatic pressure developed in the roots that force water upward, hence cell sap is forced out of the xylem present in the epithelium tissue, as a result, stomata are forced out by the root pressure.
  3. The liquid is forced out of the pores
  4. It happens during the nighttime.

Transpiration :

  1. When the soil has a high moisture content, the water enters the roots, the water gets collected in plants and creates a small root pressure, this root pressure forces the water upward in plants.
  2. It does not occur during the night when stomata are closed.
