There are several ways to increase the local supplies of water and conserve the sources of water which are available. These measures will help to resolve the fresh water crisis which is faced today.
(i) Seeding clouds with certain particles which will initiate rainfall.
(ii) The common methods of desalination are distillation or reverse osmosis.
(iii) Dams and canals are used to trap runoff and transfer water from areas of excess to areas of deficit.
(iv) Watershed management can be used by constructing series of small dams or tributary streams can hold back water before it becomes a great flood.
(v) Rainwater harvesting is the activity of collecting rain water directly or recharging it into the ground to improve groundwater storage in the aquifer is called rainwater harvesting.
(vi) Sound farming and foresting practices can reduce runoff. Retaining crop residues on fields reduces flooding.
(vii) Domestic conservation: The use of washing machines, dishwashers and low volume showerheads can reduce water loss.
(viii) Industrial conservation: The industrial water use is for cooling of electric power plants.
