Werner's coordination theory:
In a coordination compound, the central metal atom satisfies primary (principal) valence and secondary (auxillary) valence. Primary valence represents oxidation number and is written outside the coordination sphere and is non directional. Secondary valence represents coordination number. It is written inside the coordination sphere and is directional.
Note: Sometimes primary valence also acts as secondary valence. In such cases, it is written inside the coordination sphere.
Primary valence is satisfied by anions. Secondary valence is satisfied by ligands (anions and neutral molecules).
If [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 is hydrolysed it will produce three ions. These include one [Co(NH3)5Cl]2+ ion and two Cl− ions.
