1) Sol

It is a type of colloid in which solid is the dispersed phase and liquid is the dispersed medium. Examples include milk of magnesia, mud, etc.

2) Foam

Foam is a type of colloid in which gas is the dispersed phase and solid is the dispersed medium. Examples include foam, rubber sponge, etc.

3) Aerosol

An aerosol is a type of colloid in which liquid is the dispersed phase and gas is the dispersion medium. Examples include fog, clouds, mist, etc.

4) Emulsion

In emulsion, both the dispersed phase and dispersed medium are liquids. Examples include milk, face cream, etc.

5) Gel

Gel is a colloid in which the dispersed phase is a liquid and dispersed medium is a solid. Examples include cheese, butter, etc.




Dispersed phase:
The phase that is scattered or present in the form of colloidal particles is called the dispersed phase.
Dispersion medium:
The medium in which the colloidal particles are dispersed is called the dispersion medium.
  • Ex: In a starch solution, starch represents the dispersed phase, while water represents the dispersion medium.
