Question

Explain, what happens if bauxite containing iron and silica as impurities is directly subjected to the process of electrolytic reduction without prior purification.

Solution

Reduction with respect to HydrogenH2

Electrolytic reduction of Bauxite without prior purification

  • Impurities of Iron oxideFe2O3 and SilicaSiO2 are mainly present in BauxiteAl2O3.2H2O.
  • In the electrolytic reduction process Al3+Bauxite reduces at cathode by gaining3e-.
  • If impurity of Iron oxide is present in Bauxite then Fe3+ after gaining 3e- will deposit at cathode prior toAl3+.
  • Deposition of IronFe on cathode occurs due to the less electropositive nature of Iron than Aluminum.
  • The value of standard reduction potential for Aluminum is more negative -0.57V than that of Iron-0.44V.

Therefore, the deposition of IronFe at the cathode occurs if the electrolytic reduction of Bauxite takes place prior to purification.
