The dual system of government was introduced in Bengal by Robert Clive following his victory in the Battle of Plassey in 1757.
Dual government means a double administration system of government. In this system, the government was divided into two parts Diwani and Nizamat. The administration of Diwani was under the British East India Company and the administration of Nizam was under the Nawab.
Under this system, the responsibility for administration lay with the Nawab. However, the actual powers of government like revenue collection, police, and judicial power lay with the East India Company. This was a very advantageous system to the British as it gave them unlimited power to earn wealth through trade while the responsibilities of government lay with the Nawab.
