Question

Explain what is the hydrogen emission spectrum in detail?

Open in App
Solution

Emission spectrum:

  1. Electrons are in continuous motion.
  2. When molecules interact with electromagnetic radiations, the electrons jump from their lower energy level to a higher energy level and lose their stability.
  3. To attain stability electrons again jump from higher energy level to lower energy level, at that time, radiations are emitted, such emission of radiations in various ranges of regions is called an emission spectrum.
  4. This is a direct result of the transition of electrons from a lower level to a higher level and again from a higher level to a lower level.

Hydrogen emission spectrum:

  1. If a discharge is passed through Hydrogen gas, some Hydrogen atoms (H) are formed, which results in the emission of light in the visible region. This is known as the hydrogen emission spectrum.
  2. Depending on the number of shells and wavelengths there is a series of Hydrogen spectrums.
  3. The general formula is,
Equation

where RH= Rydberg's constant

n1= Initial shell number

n2= Final shell number

λ= Wavelength

The hydrogen spectrum series is as follows:

  1. Lyman series= First shell to any other shell electron transition
  2. Balmar series= Second shell to any other shell electron transition
  3. Paschen series= Third shell to any other shell electron transition
  4. Bracket series= Fourth shell to any other shell electron transition
  5. Pfund series= Fifth shell to any other shell electron transition.

So, electron transition from one shell to another shell in the Hydrogen atom is Hydrogen emission spectrum.
