Explain, why a haemodialysing unit is called an artificial kidney?

Open in App
Solution

Haemodialysis:
  • Haemodialysis is a procedure of removing urea from the blood of patients affected by uremia and kidney failure.
  • It is called artificial kidney because it replaces the function of the kidney i.e. removing urea from the blood.
  • In hemodialysis, the blood passes through a solution that has the same composition as that of plasma but without the nitrogenous wastes i.e. urea.
  • Thus, by the concentration gradient of waste, it moves from blood to the dialysis fluid
  • The purified blood is then sent back to the body
