Question

Explain why alkyl halides though polar are immiscible with water?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
the molecules of water are held together by Hydrogen bonds . Since the new forces of attraction between water and alkyl halide molecules are weaker than the forces of attraction already existing between alkyl halide - alkyl halide molecules and water - water molecules . Thus alkyl halide are immiscible with water.

Hydrocarbon part of alkyl halide being non polar is not capable of forming hydrogen bonds hence makes it immiscible in water.

In short we may say that the halogen derivative of hydrocarbon are unable to form hydrogen bond in water or break the hydrogen bond already present in water. Hence they are immiscible in water.
