Explain why: Calamine solution is applied on the skin when an ant bites.

Neutralization reaction:

  1. In neutralization, acids and bases react to form salt and water.
  2. In simple words, it is a process of neutralizing the effect of excess acid and base by reacting with respective base and acids.

Reasons for application of Calamine solution:

  1. Calamine contains Zinc carbonate which is a mild base.
  2. When it is applied to the skin, neutralizes the mild acids.
  3. Strings of ants contain formic acid.
  4. Formic acid causes irritation of the skin.
  5. When calamine is applied to the skin, it neutralizes the formic acid effect.

Hence, a Calamine solution is applied to the skin when an ant bites.
