Question

Explain why Chlorine(Cl) has relative atomic mass of about 35.5 u ?

Open in App
Solution

Chlorine exists as two isotopes Cl1735andCl1737

These isotopes are available in a 3:1 ratio.

The relative atomic mass of an element = Relativeatomicmassofanelement=(massof1stisotopexit'sabundance)+(massof2ndisotopexit'sabundance)(100)or(ratio)

Relative atomic mass of Chlorine(Cl) =(35x3)+(37x1)4=105+374=35.5

Therefore the atomic mass of the Chlorine is fractional i.e 35.5 u
