Question

explain why dehydration of alcohols to form alkenesis always carried out with conc. H2SO4and not with conc. HCl or HNO3

Open in App
Solution

Dehydration of alcohols to form alkene is carried out by conc.H2SO4 not HNO3 or HCl is due to dehydrating power of conc.H2SO4. Concentrated sulphuric acid act as dehydrating agent. As the water is formed in the reaction it will remove the water molecules from the reaction. Concentrated Nitric acid and concentrated Hydrogen chloride are not dehydrating agent.
