Explain why dilute nitric acid is generally considered a typical acid but not so in its reaction with metals?

HNO3 is considered as a typical acid except for its reaction with metals. When it reacts with metals generally it will not liberate hydrogen. It will only liberate hydrogen when it is very dilute i.e. 1%.
