Question

Explain why H2O2 is stored in black painted glass bottles?

Open in App
Solution

1. H2O2 is a chemical compound named as Hydrogen Peroxide.

2. The color of pure hydrogen peroxide is slight pale blue and is clear liquid.

3.Hydrogen Peroxide is thermodynamically unstable, i.e. it decomposes when exposed to light.

4. If it is exposed to light, it decomposes to give Water and oxygen gas. The reaction is given as :

2H2O2(l)ā†’uvradiations2H2O(l)+O2(g)

5. For this reason, Hydrogen Peroxide is kept in dark glass bottles to prevent thermal decomposition.
