Explain why hard water is not fit for washing clothes ?

• The presence of specific dissolved Calcium $\left(\mathrm{Ca}\right)$ and Magnesium $\left(\mathrm{Mg}\right)$ salts in water causes water to be hard.
• Hard water is not fit for washing.
• Hard water does not form lather with soap because a large amount of soap is used to neutralize the salts present in water, resulting in the formation of scum which sticks to clothes during washing making them dirtier.
