Question

Explain why:
ICl is more reactive than I2.

Open in App
Solution

Inter halogen compound ICl have partial ionic character due to the electronegativity difference between Cl and I, whereas iodine I2 forms covalent bond which are much stronger than ionic bond.
Since lesser the bond strength higher the reactivity and this explains the higher reactivity of ICl than I2.
