Question

Explain why: In the electroplating of an article with silver, the electrolyte sodium argentocyanide solution is preferred over silver nitrate solution.

Solution

Electroplating is a process in which coating of metal is done with a thin layer of another metal.

Sodium argentocyanide Na[Ag(CN)2] is preferred to silver nitrate as an electrolyte because if we use sodium argentocyanide, the deposition of sliver on the metal article is slow and there is a smooth and uniform plating on the metal surface.
