Question

Explain :
Why is the tungsten used almost exclusively for filament of electric lamps?

Solution

Tungsten is used for filaments in electric lamp because of,
  1. High electrical resistivity: Electric lamp works on the principle of heating effect of current. So, high heat generation is required for effective operation. Since the heat generated is proportional to resistance, a high resistance is desired. This property is provided by tungsten.
  2. High melting point: The temperature inside an incandescent bulb usually reaches extremely high temperatures. Tungsten has a very high melting point and does not melt.
