Question

Explain why propanol has higher boiling point than that of the butane?

Open in App
Solution

Due to presence of -OH group, propanol undergoes intermolecular hydrogen bonding. However, butane cannot form such bonds since it has no OH bonds.
To break hydrogen bonds, extra energy is required.
Hence, propanol has higher boiling point than that of the butane.
