Question

Explain why R3P=O exists but R3N=O does not.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Chris,

However, both N & P belong to same group (gp V) having 5 electron in their valence shell. Nitrogen can not extend its valency beyond 3 because of absence of d-subshell while phosphorous can extend its valency upto 5 due to the presence of 3d-subshell. Therefore, R3P=O exist while R3N=O not.
